Help gather distribution data for the Atlas!
We are looking for volunteers to help supply the Atlas with specimen data. These additional data will help make the county distribution information in the Atlas more complete. Those interested can work on counties or taxonomic groups (families, genera, or species). Objectives include making the county distribution information more accurate and providing information on what year(s) a species was found in a county. These objectives can be accomplished by either finding specimens of interest already in herbaria or making new collections and depositing them in herbaria. The data from the specimens should be transcribed into our provided spreadsheet and sent to us. Download the spreadsheet here. If you have questions please contact us at atlasrecords@nyflora.org. And thanks for your help!
Updates to the Atlas (updated 12 December 2023)
Updates to the taxonomy and nomenclature as well as recent additions, exclusions, and status changes in the New York Flora Atlas are noted in this document. These are all the major changes (not including errata) since the publication of the Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State. As updates are made to the Atlas a revised document will be available, so check back periodically. Updated 12 December 2023
Errata for Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State
Errata for the Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State is available on the bottom of the Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Volume 27: Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State webpage. As additional errors are found they will be added to the Errata.
Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State published
The book Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State by David Werier has been published. See the announcement below for details.
The Torrey Botanical Society is proud to present, as Volume 27 of the Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Society,
Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State by David Werier
The Catalogue is a much needed up-to-date account of the vascular plants known from outside of cultivation in New York State. As a result of a fresh and independent examination of the flora, the Catalogue differs significantly from previous checklists for the state and incorporates much new research.
The Catalogue’s introductory material includes a history of statewide accounts of the flora, starting with John Torrey’s publications in the 1840s. The annotated species list, which includes 3,524 species, 134 additional infraspecific taxa, and 264 hybrids, contains scientific names, common names, synonyms, nativity status, nonnative status, voucher information, state ranks for rarities, and notes on certain species. Additionally, a list of taxa excluded from the flora is presented (excluded list) as well as a list of taxa that very likely occur, should occur, or soon may occur in the state (expected list). A thorough comparison is made between the Catalogue and the last previous checklist for the state.
The Catalogue is 543 pages and costs $35 plus shipping and handling for a hard copy.
An electronic version is also available.

NYS vascular plant checklist is being revised and your help is requested.
I (David Werier, the second author of the NY Flora Atlas) am currently working on creating an up to date checklist of the vascular plants of New York. The list will include all taxa of vascular plants that occur outside of cultivation in the state, including taxa that are currently believed to be extirpated in New York. The New York Natural Heritage Program is sponsoring this project (with EPA funding) and it should be complete by early 2015. At that time I will update the Atlas with the new information. This is an exciting time for the New York Flora! This project is not focusing on distribution within the state or many other fields that are present in the Atlas (such as habitat and persisting status). These items will have to wait till a later time.
As part of this project, I have created what I am calling a desiderata list. This is a list of taxa (including hybrids) that are known from near New York or that might occur in the state but have never been accurately reported from the state. The list is not comprehensive and there are many more names that could be added. In addition, I have yet to add any members of the Asteraceae or Rosaceae. The plants on this list may have already been collected and I will be searching for specimens housed at herbaria. The list can be downloaded from this link. I am creating a challenge, for those that are interested, to see how many of these taxa can be found growing outside of cultivation in New York. Finds can be via herbarium specimens that have already been collected or by new discoveries in the field. I will be keeping a tally and anyone that makes at least one find will be acknowledged. If you make a find please let me know at this email. For new field discoveries I will need a well prepared and labeled specimen, which I will deposit at a major herbarium. If the new field discovery is from a rare native species, where collecting would negatively impact the population, instead of a specimen, I will need information regarding the population as well as high quality diagnostic images. So good luck and happy hunting.
