Shores of streams, mesic forests, wet to mesic disturbed soils, gravel pits, roadsides, railroad edges, and banks of streams. Grows best in calcareous and both wet to mesic soils. Probably more common than it was historically, this species can form dense extensive stands and is fairly common especially in calcareous soils.
