Sorrie and Weakley (2007) argue for four distinct taxa to be recognized at the specific level within the Gaylussacia dumosa complex. Gaylussacia dumosa sensu stricto occurs primarily from West Virginia and Virginia south with one record from Maryland. Gaylussacia dumosa and G. bigeloviana can be distinguished by morphology and habitat (Sorrie and Weakley 2007). The only taxon in New York is G. bigeloviana.
