American chestnut
Dry to mesic forests often associated with Quercus spp. The introduced chestnut blight kills the trees and mature trees are now rather scattered and rare. Still, stump sprouts and small trees are not uncommon although they soon become infested with the blight.

This particular species is difficult to rank at both the state and global level. The large majestic trees and expansive chestnut forests of yester are now gone; lost due to the chestnut blight. While we still have many chestnut scattered throughout our forests, these no longer reach the status of large trees and no longer fill the great ecological niche they once occupied. Most reproduction is via root suckers.
