This species was first found in New York in 1873 near Ithaca (Dudley 1886). In 1885 it was reported from near Binghamton in Hawleytown (Millspaugh 1885). From these reports we believe that this species may have been a rare native in south-central New York. Although, since this species is known to be weedy, was first found in New York relatively late, and the Ithaca site is near a previous Native American settlement as well as railroad lines it may have been unintentionally or intentionally brought into New York by human activities. This species was also in cultivation and clearly naturalizing from such plantings in south-central New York as early as the late 1800's (Millspaugh 1885, Clute 1898, Wiegand and Eames 1926). This species is listed by Mitchell and Tucker (1997) as a non-native in New York. It is now very common probably as the result of naturalizing from widespread cultivation as well as land use changes since the late 1800's. Currently we believe that this species was a rare native in south-central New York but has since expanded its range due to humans and therefore can be considered non-native in other areas of New York.
