Maritime forests (forests adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean or Long Island Sound), dunes, thickets, swamps, and roadsides in dry-mesic to wet or inundated soils on steep slopes or flat areas. Very common and perhaps restricted to maritime areas where it sometimes becomes a dominant species.
