Marshes, openings in swamps, rich fens, channels, ditches; edges of ponds, lakes, and streams; and gravel and sand bars in streams. Highly invasive and often becoming the dominant herbaceous plant in various wetland types but usually most abundant in marshes and disturbed wet sites. With the release of some insects as biocontrol, populations may start to decrease in abundance.
