This taxon occurs primarily west of the Appalachian Mountains (Gillis 1971) and in New York it is primarily restricted to the western and central parts of the state with a few populations known from the northern and eastern parts of the state. On the other hand, subspecies radicans is the common taxon of the southeastern part of the state. Where the range of these two subspecies overlap slightly (e.g. in eastern New York) hybrids or introgressed plants can be expected although no intermediates are currently known from New York. Some specimens which have been reported to the atlas without distinguishing subspecies may in fact be ssp. negundo and these specimens should be critically examined.
