Aedo (2000) found that the morphological characters that were previously used to separate various infraspecific taxa varied considerably but "independently" (i.e suites of characters did not align) and therefore he lumped all these taxa. We follow his work and lump G. carolinianum var. sphaerospermum under a morphologically variable G. carolinianum.
