Hummocks in cool deciduous to coniferous swamps, adjacent to seeps in cool rich northern hardwood forests, and cool coniferous forests adjacent to marshes. Often on mosses in shaded habitat. This species often grows in wetland habitats but up on hummocks or on ridges that are more mesic. Common herbaceous associates include Coptis trifolia, Carex trisperma, and C. leptalea.
